Why the proposal isn't bold reform or efficient, but removes crucial constitutional and democratic safeguards and is a direct threat to parliamentary accountability.
Henry my understanding and I stand to be corrected is that peers who are appointed as a minister ie David Cameron are not subject to cross examination or the scrutiny as elected MPβs.
I also agree with previous comment regarding the position of members of the numerous Quangos performing the role of pseudo ministries. They are not elected and are not just performing an advisory role. They formulate policy which is then accepted at ministerial level and potentially introduced into legislation.
I see nothing in what Nigel Farage has to say that suggests anything to cause great concern. If this improves government efficiency and is able to counteract the inefficiency of our civil service, I think we should wholeheartedly support the initiative.
Some really good points here, some of which I'd not considered. Thank you.
Thank you for reading it Jane :-)
I always enjoy your commentary such as with Dan Wootton on Outspoken.

Surely we have these now - Quangos?.
The Civil Service basically tell the elected ministers what they can and can't do.
Makes no sense.
Donβt they already do this by giving someone a peerage and then inviting them into government ?
